problem exacerbated by mixed surrounds (4, 7)], in agreement with the behavior of a major class of cortical cells (10), as well as with psychophysical evidence for color/luminance interactions (I 1). All of this bears on Masland's dichotomy between the multiplexing (co-coding) and parallel channel approaches. Models that do not filter parvo cells do not account for the properties of cortical cells. Moreover, the use of parvo cells for achromatic form perception without filtering to separate color is inappropriate. As Marr pointed out, the zero crossings of the P cell signal are ambiguous if the color signal is not removed (I 2). If the color signal is extractable, it makes little sense not to use it. Evidence for Ancient Martian Life

Three SNC meteorites ranging in age from 4.5 Ga. to 1.3 Ga. to 165 m.y. contain features suggestive of past biogenic activity on Mars [1,2]. Because we do not know what past martian life looks like or its physical or chemical properties, the only tools or criteria which the scientific community have to evaluate evidence of past life is to use evidence for early life on earth. There are features...

Combining meteorites and missions to explore Mars.

Laboratory studies of meteorites and robotic exploration of Mars reveal scant atmosphere, no evidence of plate tectonics, past evidence for abundant water, and a protracted igneous evolution. Despite indirect hints, direct evidence of a martian origin came with the discovery of trapped atmospheric gases in one meteorite. Since then, the study of martian meteorites and findings from missions hav...

The physics, biology, and environmental ethics of making mars habitable.

The considerable evidence that Mars once had a wetter, more clement, environment motivates the search for past or present life on that planet. This evidence also suggests the possibility of restoring habitable conditions on Mars. While the total amounts of the key molecules--carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen--needed for creating a biosphere on Mars are unknown, estimates suggest that there ma...

The WISDOM Radar: Unveiling the Subsurface Beneath the ExoMars Rover and Identifying the Best Locations for Drilling

The search for evidence of past or present life on Mars is the principal objective of the 2020 ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Rover mission. If such evidence is to be found anywhere, it will most likely be in the subsurface, where organic molecules are shielded from the destructive effects of ionizing radiation and atmospheric oxidants. For this reason, the ExoMars Rover mission has been optimized to in...
